A woman has tragically died after falling while she was descending the stairs leading her to the airport's tarmac. Maria da Gloria Pereira da Silva Favaro, 72, died in hospital two days after suffering a tragic fall at Congonhas Airport in São Paulo while travelling to her daughter's birthday celebration.

She was rushed to Alemao Osvaldo Cruz Hospital by ambulance following the accident but sadly two days later she died. Maria had arrived on flight LA3785 from Ribeirão Preto and was making a connection in Brazil’s capital before continuing her journey to Cuiabá. A LATAM Airlines Brazil employee remained by the mum's side at the hospital until her family arrived.

Maria’s daughter, Raquel Fávaro, shared an emotional tribute to her mum on social media. Thanking her mum "for everything" Raquel heartbreakingly wrote she will "always" love her.

She wrote: “I will always love you. After I became a mother, I realised that your love and selflessness were actually even greater than I could see.

“Thank you for everything and, especially, for what you did that I couldn’t ‘see’.

“I hope that my love will one day repay, at least in part, everything you did for me.”

Offering their "condolences" Latam Airlines Brazil said they followed the "protocols established for this type of situation".

A spokesperson for the airline said: “On Friday a passenger suffered a fall while descending the stairs during disembarkation from flight LA 3785.

“She was assisted by an ambulance and taken to a local hospital for treatment, accompanied by a company employee who remained on site until the family arrived.

“LATAM deeply regrets the passenger’s death and extends its condolences to her family.

“The airline emphasizes that it followed all protocols established for this type of situation, reiterating that it adopts all possible safety measures, both technical and operational, to ensure a safe journey for everyone.”

Aena Brasil, the company that manages Congonhas Airport, said they "deeply regret" Maria's death.

Aena's statement read: "Aena reports that medical teams at Congonhas Airport were called out last Friday to assist a passenger who fell while descending the stairs during disembarkation. After receiving first aid, the passenger was taken to the Jabaquara Emergency Care Unit.

"Aena deeply regrets the passenger's death and expresses its condolences to her family and friends."
