A 13-year-old girl was left pregnant after being gang raped. Four men have been jailed after being convicted on charges of joint act and unlawful sexual intercourse with a child.
A court heard how the men took turns raping the girl in 2023 before giving her money afterwards. The attack left her pregnant and local police launched an immediate investigation. After the men were identified and arrested, detectives used a medical report confirming penetration, the victim's statement and voice recordings to charge them. They initially admitted to raping the girl before pleading not guilty to the charges, forcing the case to a full trial.

Following their sentencing on Thursday (June 25), Senior Magistrate Christy Barau described the crime as "animalistic, inhumane, and heartless". She also noted the rise of rape cases, particularly against children, across the state and wider country.
Mohammed Jibrin Lemu, defending, said the attackers showed remorse throughout the trial. However, Mrs Barau noted the seriousness of the crime and sentenced Salisu Baura, Lawali Sha’ibu, Haruna Sa’idu to 25 years behind bars each.
Meanwhile, the fourth, Bello, was sentenced to 20 years for unlawful sexual intercourse with a child. However, local reports say he was granted bail and is now at large.
