Police in Spain are warning of a rapidly spreading scam targeting shoppers using a fake €50 (£41) note. Residents and tourists, in particular, are being urged to remain cautious of the sneaky scheme, which is particularly being reported in shopping centre car parks and busy city streets.
The scam, known as the 50-Euro Trick, reportedly involves a counterfeit €50 note placed under the windscreen wiper of a parked car. When the driver returns, they often see the note and get out of their vehicle to check it out, giving the criminals the chance to make their move. Phones, handbags, and even the car itself can be stolen if keys are left in the ignition, reports say.

The Spanish police are urging people to remain cautious amid a rise in cases.
If motorists spot a note on their windscreen, they are being encouraged not to inspect it immediately and instead lock the car and drive to a safe area before investigating further.
Never leaving keys inside the car is also being advised.

A Policia National video on TikTok warning about the scam has been watched more than 700,000 times.
Other scams in Spain have been highlighted by police, including the so-called Flat Tyre Trick where scammers pretend the driver’s vehicle has a punctured tyre.
It is said as the motorist checks the supposed damage, the thieves take this as an opportunity to steal valuables from the vehicle.
Spain is the most popular overseas destination for Britons.
Almost 18 million Brits visited Spain in 2023, drawn in by its good weather, sandy beaches, good food, rich culture and more.
