A protype high-speed train in China that reaches a test speed of 279mph will be the “fastest” in the world. The new CR450, which is currently undergoing tests on Beijing railway lines, was first revealed in prototype in December 2024.
The train is expected to normally run at 248mph. Operating on a magnet traction system, the trains are significantly faster than the CR400 Fuxing, also high-speed and currently in service, which operates at 217mph. So, what are these trains like?

Wang Feng, vice president of train manufacturer CRRC Corporation Limited explained it in detail.
He said that the CR450 represents a comprehensive leap in the theory, technology, equipment, standards, and operational management of this class of trains.
Mr Wang shared that in order to achieve the unprecedented operational speed of 400 kilometres per hour, engineers improved traction capacity, dynamic performance, and pantograph systems, reports the China Science and Technology Daily.
The vehicle employs a water-cooled permanent magnet traction system, a new-generation high-stability bogie, and multi-system innovations to keep it running at high speeds.

Over 4,000 on-board monitoring sensors have been installed to ensure proper safety and security on the train services.
The sensors track in real time key systems such as running gear, vehicle body, high-voltage pantographs, train control and fire detection systems. In addition, a ‘beyond the horizon’ system enhances recognition of track emergencies.
According to Mr Wang, the aerodynamic design of the bogie deck lowers the air resistance and helps in saving energy.
Seven innovative technologies, including sound-absorbing materials and optimised aerodynamic shapes, reduce cabin noise by 2 decibels, offering passengers a quieter and more pleasant ride.
