Spain has announced plans for a new €100million (£84million) "Caribbean-esque" resort featuring a white sand beach with crystal-clear waters and a 200-room luxury hotel just a few kilometres from a major city. The Lagoon City project is set to be built just seven kilometres from Seville, a popular tourist hotspot in southern Spain.
The 'small city within a large city' will also feature three aparthotel towers, an event centre, restaurants, a sky bar, and a waterfront promenade, Olive Press reports. It will reportedly be accessible to the public via a paid ticket. The project is set to be developed by Forty Management, in collaboration with Crystal Lagoons.
Bormujos City Council approved the project after a €100 million (£84million) investment, according to HOSTELTUR.
The developers said: "Bormujos Town Hall will support this major investment by fast-tracking urban planning documentation, ensuring access infrastructure, creating an exclusive public transport line, and providing medium-term rental apartments for professors and doctors working at the local university and hospital."
Seville is the capital of Spain's Andalusia region and is known as the 'frying pan of Europe' for its incredibly hot summers. But in the winter months, it offers a more comfortable day time temperature of around 18C.
It is a big tourist centre, with around three million tourists a year, placing it third behind Madrid and Barcelona.
The city is approximately 2,200 years old, with its mythological founder being Hercules (or Heracles in Greek). According to the myth, he sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar to the Atlantic Ocean and founded two trading ports at the current sites of Seville and Cadiz. Seville harbour, 50 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, is Spain’s only river port.
The Old Town is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising three buildings: the Alcazar palace complex, the Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies.
Seville Cathedral, built in the twelfth-century, is considered to be the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, as well as one of the largest in general.
Skyscanner currently has flights from London to Seville for just £86 return.
You can also take the Eurostar to Paris and train from there via Barcelona to Seville. This is more expensive at £230 and will take longer, but if you want a slow and steady trip it could be perfect.
