The New York Post reported Jonas André de Lima, a security guard, went into the sea to help the 19-year-old girl who was a relative. He told local media: “She was very badly injured and already without her leg.

“I went into the water because she was drifting a little further away and losing strength.

"I don’t know, so I grabbed her by the arm, brought her out, pulling her, swimming back to shore, and people came and helped me."

In a harrowing account, the uncle of the 11-year-old boy who was attacked told local media the traumatised youngster "was conscious and just kept begging me not to let him die".

He added: “We were all in the sea before the attack, and I had just left the water and left the kids in the sea.

"Then I heard a strange noise, and when I turned round, all I could see was blood. I didn’t think twice and raced into the water to get my nephew out."
