Tenerife and Gran Canaria have been issued orange weather warnings as Storm Therese continues to batter the holiday hotspots. The Islands are bracing themselves for more turbulent weather and heavy downpours with the unsettled weather forecast to remain until at least Wednesday.

The Spanish Met Office (AEMET) has issued orange and yellow weather warnings on all of the Canary Islands. These alerts currently expire on Wednesday; however, the weather agency warns they could be extended as forecasts are updated. Storm Therese was named by the weather service last week - mainly because of the risk of disruption in Madeira and the Azores, but now the Canaries are bearing the brunt of the unprecedented weather conditions.

The entirety of Gran Canaria is under an orange weather alert which warns that significant danger is possible. AEMET says 30mm of rain could fall in one hour whilst a whopping 80mm is possible over 12 hours.

La Palma is also blanketed by an orange weather warning with the accumulated rainfall over 12 hours expected to hit 120mm, especially on summits and northern slopes.

Occasional thunderstorms are also forecast to hit. Gusts in La Palma are forecast to hit 70km/h (43mph). The strong winds will mainly hit mid-altitude areas in the north and high-altitude areas.

The east, south and west of Tenerife is under an orange weather alert with these parts of the island forecast to be drenched in 30mm of rain in one hour with thunderstorms possible.

Last week the Tenerife Island Council - Cabildo de Tenerife - activated its emergency plan, warning locals and visitors to exercise caution and to avoid unnecessary travel.
