Teacher accused of having 'sex with student and allowing him to sleep over at her house'

A middle-school teacher and local football coach has been accused of having sex with a student who would often go to her home and stay overnight. According to court documents, Jessica Bergmann, a 34-year-old math teacher at Washington Middle School in Illinois, was arrested by US police last month after a now 17-year-old boy was spotted repeatedly making trips to her home.

DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office says the student “would frequently go to Bergmann’s home, occasionally staying overnight, where the two would engage in sexual intercourse.” The alleged victim is thought to have been a former student of the teacher, also being in the football team that she used to coach.

After the student had left middle school, Bergmann is alleged to have started texting and phoning the now high school student, then prosecutors claim “the relationship between the two turned sexual.”

Bergmann was arrested on Friday, November 7 and has since been charged with criminal sexual assault in a position of authority and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in a position of authority.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin added: “The profound abuse of trust and authority allegedly displayed by Ms Bergmann is extremely disturbing and will be met with the full force of the law.

“Teachers are entrusted with our students’ well-being. They are given the awesome responsibility to guide and protect our students, not to harm or exploit them.

“A teacher who takes advantage of a student, as alleged in this case, is not only breaking the law, but they are also breaking the trust placed in them by the community, the school and the victim’s family.”

Bergmann has been released on bail on the condition that she must not contact the victim or anybody under 18, despite the prosecutor's efforts to keep her in custody before her court date on December 1.
