Driver dead and 20 believed to be injured so far

Emergency services have confirmed that at least 20 people were injured, four of them critically, after a commuter train derailed near Barcelona when a retaining wall collapsed onto the tracks.

Spanish officials said the train driver was killed in the incident, while the remaining injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The derailment comes just two days after a separate train collision in southern Spain left 42 people dead and injured dozens more, prompting renewed scrutiny over rail safety across the country.

Location

The crash happened near the town of Gelida, around 35 minutes from Barcelona.

Spain’s rail operator ADIF said a containment wall likely gave way after heavy rainfall swept across Catalonia earlier this week.
