Donald Trump has threatened Vladimir Putin with heavier sanctions if he does not agree to a ceasefire as Moscow prepares for its annual Victory Day parade. The US president took to his social media platform Truth Social after speaking on the phone with Volodymyr Zelensky about peace negotiations. He wrote: "Talks with Russia/Ukraine continue. The US calls for, ideally, a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. If the ceasefire is not respected, the US and its partners will impose further sanctions."

UK's wave of sanctions targets Russian ships raining on Putin's military parade

Sir Keir Starmer's office announced massive sanctions on 100 oil tankers in an effort to target Vladimir Putin's "shadow fleet" used to transport the crucial Russian export.

The ships, used to circumvent existing regulations, have carried over £18 billion worth of cargo since 2024, something Sir Keir Starmer vowed to "destroy".

The new measures will ban the sanctioned tankers from British ports and could see them detained in the country's waters.

The Prime Minister is expected to announce the fresh wave of restrictions at the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) summit of northern European leaders in Oslo, Norway.

US will 'walk away' from Russia-Ukraine negotiations for key reason

JD Vance said the US would "walk away" from negotiating peace in Ukraine if it believes Russia to be acting in bad faith.

He told Fox news:"We knew that Russia would ask for too much because Russia's perspective on the ground is that they're winning. Our attitude is we don't want Ukraine to collapse. We obviously want Ukraine to remain a sovereign country.

"But Russia can't expect to be given territory they haven't even conquered yet. I actually think that it’s progress that they’re even talking at all – the Russians and Ukrainians. I think it’s progress that they are putting concrete peace plans on the table. But we knew that the Russians' first offer would be too much.

"We knew that they would ask for more than what was reasonable to give, that's how negotiations often work. What would bother me is if we conclude that the Russians are not engaging in negotiation in good faith. And if that happens, yeah, we're going to walk away. The president’s gonna say – we’re out of this."
