A huge magnitude 8.2 earthquake has struck in the Philippines, sparking a tsunami alert. The earthquake was centred near Mindanao at a depth of 63km.

Residents in several areas reported strong shaking, prompting people to evacuate buildings as a precaution.

Authorities have yet to release official details regarding the earthquake’s epicenter and possible damage.

Horror footage emerges of moment earthquake strikes

Chilling footage of the moment the earthquake struck Sarangani in the Philippines this morning has surfaced online, with video capturing a building crumbling as the Earth tectonic plates shift with force.

Video shared by local media has surfaced on X, formerly Twitter, captures the moment the earth shook the RD Plaza building, where radio stations where LOVE Radio Gensan and DZRH News FM were located.

The building can be seen crumbling following as the earth shakes.

Australia cancels tsunami watch

Australia's equivalent of the Met Office, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has cancelled its tsunami watch warning for Australia's coast and its territories.The cancellation was issued by the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) at 10.38am AEST on Monday 8 June 2026 - or, in other words, five minutes ago, as per time of writing - the BoM reports.

A statement issued by BoM reads: "An undersea earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred at 9.37am AEST on Monday 8, June 2026 near Mindanao, Philippines. "No tsunami waves have been observed that pose a threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories."

The BoM added: "THE TSUNAMI WATCH FOR AUSTRALIA IS CANCELLED. No further updates will be issued unless the situation changes."

Quake downgraded to 7.8

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has downgraded the earthquake to 7.8 magnitude quake.

Tsunami could hit NZ in 10 hours, officials say

The New Zealand Civil Defence wrote in a post on Facebook:

"We are assessing whether the M8.2 Philippines earthquake poses any tsunami threat to New Zealand. If a tsunami has been generated it is not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least 10 hours."

Tsunami advisory issued for Southern Japan

The Japanese Meteorological Society has issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas in the southern parts of the country.

Honolulu records earthquake as magnitude 8.2 at 63km depth

Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has said Honolulu recorded the earthquake as magnitude 8.2 at a depth of 63km.

US issued with tsunami warning

The west coast of the United States has also been issued a tsunami warning.

Hazardous tsunami waves resulting from this earthquake are possible within the next three hours.Coastal regions most at risk include Indonesia, the Philippines, Palau, Yap, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea.

Australia has also issued a tsunami alert for the northern city of Darwin and Christmas Island, and New Zealand is assessing the threat level.
