Pope Leo XIV's older brother shared an clip in which former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was described as a "drunk c***". Louis Prevost appeared to share posts on social media showing support for US President Donald Trump's administration.

The posts appeared just weeks before Leo emerged from a papal conclave as the first person born in the US to head the Roman Catholic church. A clip of Ms Pelosi voicing concerns about the trade deficit between the US and China from 1996 was shared in a post by Louis Prevost in April.

The Facebook post, which wasn't written by the elder Prevost sibling, said: "These f***ing liberals crying about tariffs is just unreal. Do they not know that there is a thing called video?"

It added: "Just listen to what this drunk c*** has to say. In the mid 90’s (sic)."

In another Facebook post that appeared in the same month, Louis Prevost shared a clip of a mock support group for people suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS).

This is a mock illness Republicans have defined as the "acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal persons that is in reaction" to Mr Trump's policies.

Mr Prevost wrote: "For my upset, crying and left-leaning friends and others suffering from TDS, this service seems right for you."

He has also expressed support for Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency and commented on the war in Ukraine, according to The Independent.

The new pope's brother told Newsmax that Leo's role means he will have to "modify" what he says, does and writes.

Louis Prevost told the publication: "I don’t want to get him in trouble or raise any grief or cause problems."

He acknowledged there would be differences of opinion between him and his brother, who has cautioned against the Trump administration's immigration policies.

In early February before he became pope, Leo shared an article from a Catholic publication headlined: JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.

It came days after the US Vice President, who is a convert to Catholicism, discussed immigration in a Fox News interview.

He referenced a Christian tenet that "you love your family and then you love your neighbour and then you love your community and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritise the rest of the world".

Leo's historic election last week means he now leads the world's 1.4 billion Catholics as the first US-born pope. It arguably also means the two most powerful people on the planet are Americans.

Mr Trump wished Leo well and described it as a "great honour" that the new pope was American.
