Mamdani's election is historic. The mayor-elect made his name in less than a year and was faced a Democratic party reluctant to endorse him. Now, he vows to make his win a sign that an alternative exists to Trump politics, and took on the US president during his victory speech. For voters, his determination to stand up to the Republican leader is part of what won them over.
