Donald Trump's White House has branded the BBC as a "Leftist propaganda machine" after a case of biased doctoring of one of the US President's speeches has come to light. The White House has accused the BBC of "purposeful dishonesty" and condemned the way the UK corporation selectively edited a speech made by the president, dismissing it as "100% fake news".

Karoline Leavitt, Mr Trump’s press secretary, said British taxpayers were being "forced to foot the bill for a Leftist propaganda machine" after The Telegraph revealed that a Panorama documentary had spliced together different parts of a speech made by Mr Trump on January 6, 2021, which made it seem as though he told supports to go to the Capitol and "fight like hell" on the day of the riot. Ms Leavitt told The Telegraph: “This purposefully dishonest, selectively edited clip by the BBC is further evidence that they are total, 100% fake news that should no longer be worth the time on the television screens of the great people of the United Kingdom.

She continued: "Every time I travel to the United Kingdom with President Trump and am forced to watch the BBC in our hotel rooms, it ruins my day listening to their blatant propaganda and lies about the president of the United States and all that he’s doing to make America better and the world a safer place."

Ms Leavitt did not, however, make any comment regarding an end to the BBC licence fee.

Donald Trump Jr also attacked the BBC on X, writing: "The FAKE NEWS' reporters' in the UK are just as dishonest and full of s*** as the ones here in America!!!!"

A whistleblower’s dossier described how the Panorama programme, broadcast just before last year’s US election, “completely misled” viewers by showing the president telling a crowd that he was going to walk with them to the Capitol to “fight like hell”.

It omitted a section from his speech, when he urged them to make their voices heard “peacefully”.

Senior officials at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport have received the dossier and are now reportedly investigating the claims. The Prime Minister's spokesman told reporters: "Senior officials in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport have received a copy of the dossier and have been assured by the BBC that they themselves are examining the issues raised in the report".

He added that the Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, expects the corporation to "report the news accurately and impartially" and to "look into questions about editorial standards thoroughly, because that's obviously important for the public's trust".

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch demanded disciplinary action in an interview with GB News. "It's absolutely shocking. That is fake news," she said. "Actually putting different things together to try and make something look different from what it actually was. And I do think heads should roll. Whoever it was who did that should be sacked."

Ms Badenoch called on BBC Director-General Tim Davie to identify and dismiss those responsible, adding: "The public needs to be able to trust our public broadcaster".
