Iran's grip on the Strait of Hormuz has prompted horror fears of a global energy crisis.

IRGC Navy Commander Alireza Tangsiri has been killed in an IDF strike, reports from Israel have claimed. An Israeli official says he died in Bandar Abbas, adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz.

An official stated that the Iranian naval commander was responsible for the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. It is unclear at this moment in time whether Tangsiri was killed in a strike carried out by Israel or the US, or what circumstances this was under. This news has not yet been confirmed by the Israeli military or Iranian authorities.

Born in 1962 Tangsiri served as a naval brigade commander during the Iran-Iraq War. Tangsiri had consistently promoted a strong Iranian naval stance and strongly defended Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.

He previously said all ships must get permission from Iranian authorities before passing and warning foreign warships to stay away.

Last week, he threatened US facilities in the region "will come under fire with full force", warning locals and wokers to stay away.

"Our list of targets is updated. Oil facilities associated with America are now on par with American bases and will come under fire with full force," Tangsiri said at the time.

In September 2007 Tangsiri warned that if the US were "to clash with us, we would chase them even to the Gulf of Mexico."
