The โ International Criminal Court โhas been awarded the European โUnion's 2026 Sakharov Prize, the EU's top prize regarding human rights work.
The prize โis โthe second international โ recognition for the war crimes tribunal this month, โand comes within two weeks after US โ President Donald Trump announced sanctions against the court.
That announcement โwas made hours after former โICC judge Navi Pillay was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which was โwidely seen as a show of support for โthe embattled court.
The Hague-based ICC has long been a target of Trump, whose campaign against โit has escalated since โthe court announced arrest warrants against Israeli Prime โMinister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defence minister last year.
The EU prize, named after the late Soviet โ dissident Andrei Sakharov, has been awarded annually since โ 1988 to โindividuals and organisations defending human rights and freedoms.
