A plane has crashed at an airport in Warsaw, Poland, as it was approaching its runway for landing. While attempting to land in Warsaw's Bemowo district, the aircraft erupted into a large fireball, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky.

Two people on board the light aircraft were killed. Two bystanders were also injured and were rushed to hospital, according to Łukasz Darmofalski from the provincial headquarters of the State Fire Service. He added that the aircraft had veered off the runway and struck a building, and had already burned to the ground before firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.

One of the bystanders was in a nearby maneuvering area. The horrific crash took place this afternoon, June, 25, near 127 Powstańców Śląskich Street.

"A light aircraft crashed, the plane burst into flames", said the officer on duty.

Early indications suggest that the aircraft was attempting to land at the airport when it came down short of the runway, crashing near a driver training centre.

Four fire brigades rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire using two water jets, they also confirmed the deaths of both people on the board the plane. Emergency services have now secured the area and are currently conducting investigations at the scene.

It is unknown at this time why the plane crashed. "We're extinguishing the fire, using two streams of foam, and securing the scene. At this point, I can't say how this incident occurred," Brig. Przemysław Girgiel told Polsat News.

Locals reported hearing a loud bang shortly before "cloufds of black smoke" filled the afternoon sky.

One local wrote on X that they noticed a plane "flying strangely" seconds before the crash.
