An 11-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after being bitten by a shark while at the beach with his friends. After being rushed to the hospital and undergoing surgery yesterday, May 31, the boy's uncle confirmed that his left leg had been amputated.

The child had gone to Piedade Beach in Jaboatao dos Guararapes near the Brazilian city of Recife when the tragic incident occurred. His uncle told a local newspaper that "all he could see was blood" and how he raced into the ocean where his conscious nephew was "begging" him "not to let him die". A tearful Aldemir Jose said he had gone to the beach yesterday morning with three children including his nephew and daughter after finishing work.

He said: “We were all in the sea before the attack and I had just left the water and left the kids in the sea.

“Then I heard a strange noise and when I turned round all I could see was blood. I didn’t think twice and raced into the water to get my nephew out.

“He was conscious and just kept begging me not to let him die.”

A nurse tended to the injured child until the first emergency services arrived. The shark is believed to have bitten the child in the hip and left hand just after 1.30pm local time yesterday, his uncle later confirmed the tragic news that his left leg had been amputated.

Fire officials say the mauling happened in an area covered by a state decree warning about the risk of shark attacks.

Although Piedade Beach is open to bathers there are signs on the beach warning locals and holidaymakers. The sign reads: “Danger - Shark Zone.”

Danise Alves, the executive secretary of the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT), said: “In Jaboatao, the bathing ban extends from the BarraMares Hotel to the Piedade Church.

“Where the boy was attacked, the sign informs that the area is subject to attacks and provides information on when swimming should be avoided.”

Piedade Beach is considered a shark attack hotspot in Brazil, recording dozens of incidents over the past three decades.

Yesterday’s shark attack was the third so far this year in the north-east Brazilian state of Pernambuco which encompasses Piedade Beach.

Over the past 34 years there have been 83 recorded shark attacks in the state, resulting in 27 deaths.
