At least four people are dead and several others injured after an armed man went on a shooting rampage at a restaurant in the Montenegrin city of Cetinje on Wednesday.
Authorities say the gunman, armed and dangerous, remains at large, as reported by the Associated Press.
Special police units have been deployed to search for the suspect in Cetinje, located about 30 kilometres northwest of Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica. Identified only by his initials, A.M., the suspect is a 45-year-old man.
Police reports indicate the shooting began in a bar where the man opened fire before fleeing the scene. Local media, including state television RTCG, claim the death toll may be as high as seven and suggest the attack followed a heated bar brawl.
Prime Minister Milojko Spajić visited the hospital treating the wounded and declared three days of national mourning. “This is a terrible tragedy that has affected us all,” he was quoted as saying to the Associated Press. “All police teams are out.”
Cetinje, known as Montenegro’s historic capital, has experienced such violence before. In August 2022, an attacker killed ten people, including two children, before being stopped by a passer-by.
The RTCG report named the suspect as
Aco Martinović
, who was known for erratic behaviour and had been previously arrested for illegally owning firearms. The report says he left the bar to get his gun, returned to start shooting, and then went to another place where he killed the bar owner's children and a woman.
Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and remain calm, assuring the public that the incident is not linked to organised crime.
