The younger brother of French Green Party activist Amine Kessaci was shot dead in broad daylight in France’s second city of Marseille Thursday, multiple sources told AFP. The city’s prosecutors have not yet publicly identified the victim.

The shooting took place around 2:30pm outside the city’s largest concert venue in the working-class neighbourhood of Saint-Just.

Police are still searching for the two suspects, who fled the scene on a motorbike.

Kessaci, who stood as a local candidate for the left-wing New Popular Front alliance in last year’s legislative elections, is known locally for his activism on behalf of people who have lost family members to the city’s widespread drug-related violence.

The Green Party member founded the NGO Conscience, which provides legal and counselling support to those who have lost loved ones to drug-related violence, after his older brother Brahim was killed in a drug-related shooting in 2020.
