A woman is fighting for her life following a bear attack on the outskirts of Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, according to police reports. The incident took place on Tuesday on the edge of a forest in Skofljica, approximately six miles south-east of the city centre.

The bear retreated back into the woodland after the attack, prompting police to caution local residents to keep their distance and remain vigilant. This event comes shortly after authorities sanctioned the culling of 206 brown bears, as their numbers in the region have swelled to around 1,000.

Despite being home to just over two million inhabitants, the small Alpine country boasts extensive forested areas and numerous protected nature reserves. Despite fierce opposition from animal rights organisations, authorities occasionally give the green light for bear or wolf culls.

According to Slovenia's official STA news agency, there were two recorded bear attacks on humans in 2022.
