Undertakers noticed the woman they were about to put in her coffin was breathing.

A woman declared dead by a coroner turned out to be alive after undertakers noticed she was still breathing. The 88-year-old woman was seen by paramedics, in Pilsen, Czech Republic, before the coroner was called. 

Czech outlet Blesk reported that the woman's partner called an ambulance when he discovered showing no signs of life in their home. He told the outlet: "She didn’t move, she didn’t breathe".

According to the local report, the older man said his wife was "was still lying in bed" when the paramedics arrived.

He went on: "Then they came from the funeral service. The workers put her in a coffin, and when they were right here, in the apartment in the hallway by the door, they found out that she was alive.

"The coroner was no longer here, she had gone".

The man added his wife was currently resting in their apartment. He added: "She's lying there now. It's serious. I'm completely unhappy about it".

Pilsen police spokeswoman Michaela Raindlová said in a statement: "We are investigating all the circumstances. The legal qualification has not yet been determined and we have not yet initiated criminal proceedings".

The Coroner's organisation said in a social media statement: "We deeply regret this. Investigations are underway and personnel measures have been taken. A review of the control systems of mutual cooperation between participating entities is planned".
