Why the falling out? Trump-Modi relations strained as US doubles tariffs on India

13 hours ago 1

So what's it really all about, the U-S doubling of tariffs on India? The Trump administration insists it just wants India to stop buying then reselling discouting Russian to bypass sanctions over Ukraine. Delhi's imports of crude have indeed soared, but is it the only reason?  Supporters of Kyiv say they wish Washington applied the same zeal to others like Turkey, not to mention shadow fleets that ship Russian fossil fuels.

We asked about Delhi's muted reaction and to why it's soured between kindred political spirits Narendra Modi and Donald Trump. New U-S vice president JD Vance had also visited the prime minister in the company of his wife of Indian origin and their children.

And as relations between Delhi and DC sour, it just so happens that Modi's packing his bag for his first trip in seven years to that even bigger importer of Russian oil, China. We asked about Sunday's Shanghai Cooperation Summit in Tianjin and just how far India could pivot towards its neighbor and rival to the north.
