An air accident investigation has been launched by the Department of Transport following today's incident.
The investigation will be handled by the Department's Air Accident Investigation Unit with support from the Irish Aviation Authority
A spokesperson for the IAA told CorkBeo: "We are aware of an accident involving an aircraft in Co. Waterford. The Air Accident Investigation Unit of the Department of Transport (AAIU) is investigating the incident with the relevant emergency services.
"The AAIU is responsible for investigating accidents and serious incidents as defined in ICAO Annex 13 and associated implementing regulations. The Irish Aviation Authority will support the AAIU in its investigation into the accident"
The AAIU has been notified of an accident involving a twin-engined general aviation aircraft in the vicinity of Lisselan Co. Waterford this afternoon. The AAIU is deploying a team of four inspectors of air accidents to the accident site to commence an investigation.
Flightradar24 say the aircraft registered as EI-HPY was on its way to Béziers Cap d’Agde Airport after taking off from Sligo Airport.
However, the twin-engined plane turned around approximately 50 kilometres off the southern coast of Ireland and headed back in the direction of Waterford Airport.
The flight tracking service has released an image showing the plane turning around.

Pilot declared an emergency around 100 miles off the south east coast
The pilot declared an emergency approximately 100 miles off the south east coast on a flightpath that would have taken him towards the west coast of France and then on to the Mediteranean coast.
The plane then turned around and attempted to make it make it to airport at Waterford.
As it crossed back over the coast the plane began to lose height rapidly and it came down in a field.
