Viewers may not release that the series is entirely made using artificial intelligence
The series was produced on a budget of £30,000

However, upon first inspection what viewers may not realise is that the entire series is produced using artificial intelligence.

Non Player Combat is the brainchild of Tom Paton, who is confident that audiences are ready for a reality show created entirely by software.

“This particular audience is already OK with characters not being real,” Paton said.

“The question is, do you actually care that it’s AI if you’re entertained?

“That’s all that counts.”

Paton pointed to the millions who watch famous streamers play video games on Twitch, as well as the success of CGI films such as Avatar.

He sees this as irrefutable evidence that 18 to 35-year-olds are happy to become invested in digital characters.

The six characters were “trained” using hundreds of pages of back stories.

Each contestant can reel off factors about their childhood, love life or any tragedy they have had to deal with.

In addition to designing the characters, AI was given full editorial control of the show.

This means that players will been forced to deal with “biblical” weather conditions in varying locations – including jungles, deserts and mountain ranges.

The show, which cost less than £30,000 to produce, will be released weekly on YouTube throughout December.

While the use of AI content has drawn criticism from several established Hollywood names, such as Kate Winslet and Guillermo Del Toro, Paton stands firmly in favour.

“Someone like Guillermo Del Toro yelling ‘f*** AI’ is not only eye-rolling, it’s gatekeeping,” he said.

“Media has always diversified. Cinema didn’t kill TV. TV didn’t kill home video. Streaming didn’t kill cinema.

“Some people still swear vinyl sounds better, but that doesn’t mean Spotify shouldn’t exist.”

Paton has revealed that British broadcasters have shown interest in Non Player Combat, as well as other partnership opportunities.

Television producer, Steven D Wright, said the rise of AI reality series was “inevitable”.

“We already had Channel 4‘s Dispatches using AI presenters and are becoming so used to fake videos on TikTok and YouTube that it seems impossible to stop,” Wright said.

“If you work in TV then it’s a terrible thing, but as a viewer the only question is, are you entertained?

“We have an innate ability to believe in made-up characters.

“Cartoon, CGI, AI – it’s all just storytelling.”
