A man dubbed the ‘bird poo scammer’ has been targeting Brits in a popular Spanish tourist spot. A streetwise resident managed to take photos of the alleged scammer in Duquesa Port, southern Spain, and exposed his tricks.

The man reportedly throws messy liquid resembling bird poo onto the backs of unsuspecting tourists before offering to clean it off. While his victim is distracted, he is alleged to steal their wallets, phones and bank cards.

Earlier this month a clever tourist exposed his ruse while in Duquesa Port, set between Marbella and Gibralta. They fell victim to the fake bird poo dousing but were not fooled so easily.

Instead of allowing the man to clean them off, they took several photos of the man as he tried to escape being caught. They were published on social media, warning people about his scam.

Witnesses describe the man as wearing a black bucket hat and sunglasses and is often seen around the seafront areas. He hides in crowds and busy spots, taking advantage of tourists and expats.

Locals have urged visitors to be careful and not to accept help from strangers. This warning stands even if they are friendly or offer water to clean up a mess. It could be a distraction to steal things from you while you are unaware.

Duquesa Port is a popular tourists town in southern Spain in the Costa del Sol region. It's a 40 minute drive to popular tourist spot Marbella.

You can get there either from Gibralta Airport or via Malaga Airport. Gibralta is also a 40 minute drive away, while Malaga is just over an hour away. Nearly five million Brits visit Spain annually, with the Costa del Sol region being one of the most popular destinations.
