A university campus was placed on lockdown as shots were fired in the area, injuring multiple people. Officials confirmed a suspect was in custody following the shooting at the Kentucky State University (KSU) in the US city of Frankfort.

The state Governor, Andy Beshear, said: "At this time, we are aware of some injuries. We will share more information as available." The number of casualties wasn't immediately clear, as it was not clear whether there had been any fatalities.

The governor also asked people to pray for those affected by the incident. His message on X read: "Law enforcement are on scene, and a suspect has been arrested. Let’s pray for all those affected."

Police also confirmed a suspect was in custody. In a Facebook post, law enforcement said to have "secured the campus and have a suspect in custody".

The Frankfort Police Department officers responded to an incident involving "an active aggressor" on campus on December 9, alongside KSU campus police and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.

The campus is to remain on lockdown until further notice, police said.

The university is located approximately 25 miles northwest of Lexington, with the campus sprawling across 1,000 acres.

KSU counts more than 2,200 students as well as some 450 faculty and staff members.
