Ukraine's new NASA-inspired 'Martian' killer drones 'break the laws of physics'

Volodymyr Zelenskyy shows off Ukraine's arsenal of drones

As Russian forces struggle to make any progress in their war against Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s forces are reportedly fielding a terrifying new weapon against their invaders.

This weapon – referred to by the Russians as 'The Martian Drone' – is fast, silent, and deadly. Devised, according to some reports, with the help of NASA engineers it threatens to completely change the way wars are fought around the world.

Russia’s attack on its smaller neighbour was originally expected to take just three days, but as it enters its fifth year, the conflict has become longer than the war between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.

The years-long stalemate has been, at least in part, maintained because of Ukraine’s innovative use of drone warfare. And now, reports The Military Show, the tide could even be turning in Ukraine’s favour thanks to a new generation of drones that “breaks the laws of physics.”

One of the limitations of conventional drones is their vulnerability to jamming signals. These sever the vital link between drone and operator. Until recently the only way round this issue was by tethering the drones to their base station with long fibre-optic cables, but that in turn limits the weapons’ range.

A statement from the Russian-appointed mayor of Horlivka, Ivan Prikhodko, reveals that Ukraine’s next-generation drones have finally brought the terror of autonomous weapons onto the battlefield: “The enemy has begun using new drones called ‘Martians,’ which, unfortunately, have a cruising speed of up to 300 kilometres per hour (or 186mph), no longer fly under operator guidance but are controlled by artificial intelligence.”

He adds that these new 'Martian' drones are "undetectable by electronic warfare systems, and drone detectors don’t spot them.”

This new breed of drones combines the manoeuvrability of conventional quadcopter-type drones with the range of larger weapons systems such as the US reaper and Predator UAVS, or Iran’s feared Shahed kamikaze drone.

Chechen special forces commander Apti Alaudinov uploaded a video on April 6, which revealed that these new longer-range Ukrainian hunter-killers have been causing chaos behind the Russian lines, as their increased range enables them to target supply depots and other vital infrastructure.

For a December New York Times report, a Ukrainian drone operator who uses the code-name Lipa demonstrated the first wave of semi-autonomous drones, showing the reporter how he guided his 'Bumblebee' device within range of the target before handing control to an internal AI system to avoid disruption from Russian electronic warfare systems.

“With his right hand, Lipa toggled a switch, unleashing the drone from human control,” the report explains. “Powered by artificial intelligence, the Bumblebee swept down without further external guidance. As it descended, it lost signal connection with Lipa …this did not matter. It continued its attack free of their command. Its sensors and software remained focused on the building and adjusted heading and speed independently.”

Russia’s Centre for Integrated Unmanned Solutions [CIUS], which is tasked with devising new weapons systems for the attackers as well as means of countering Ukraine’s drones, has obtained wreckage of these new-generation Ukrainian weapons.

In a report on the AI drones, the CIUS report notes that they have electronic components “of the highest quality, matching the level of the world’s leading microelectronics manufacturers.”

This remarkable quality has led Russians to dub Ukraine’s new wave of drones the 'Marsianin' or 'Martian'. The Military Show reports: “That name was given to Ukraine’s secretive new drone based on Russia's assumption that it was developed not in Ukraine, but as part of NASA’s Ingenuity programme.

“That programme led to the creation of a small and autonomous helicopter that eventually flew on Mars. If the Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions is to be believed, Ukraine is now fielding a version of that drone, either as-is from NASA or developed from the same sort of technology, that allows for the silent and AI-powered flight that is now being reported all over the occupied territories of Ukraine.”

These drones are operating with relative impunity. With electronic jamming impotent to stop them, only a lucky shot from ground troops can bering them down before they reach their target.

Apti Alaudinov says some of his men managed to shoot a couple of the new drones down and examined the components: “Our guys shot some down and looked at them. It appears they are jointly produced, Ukraine-Germany, Ukraine-France. They are modernised. They fly farther than the old ones…We see that European countries are trying to test their new technologies in Ukraine in the present war.”

Alongside these Bumblebee drones, which are designed to crash into their targets, Ukraine is beginning to implement this same AI technology into bomber drones, which drop explosives onto Russian troop formations as well as massive swarms of interceptor drones, which can counter the attacks or Russia’s Iranian-made Shahed drones.

It’s this new technological revolution that’s causing a devastating rise in Russian casualties. Ukraine claimed Russian casualties were at 35,351 in March 2026 , with drones causing 96% of them. That casualty rate was a 29% increase on the reported figure for February.

“These are clearly confirmed losses: we have video footage of each such strike in our system,” said Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

These massive losses are slowing Russian progress to a crawl according to estimates from Washington-based think tank The Institute for the Study of War [ISW]

Russian forces captured an average of 5.5sq km a day this year, compared to 10.66sq km a day in the middle of last year and 14.9sq km a day at the end of 2024, the ISW said. And every inch of that ground is being paid for with more and more Russian lives.

In a new propaganda video, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky showed off some of his country's "robot army," claiming that an all-automated unit forced a detachment of Russian troops to surrender without a single Ukrainian fighter being present on the battlefield.

He said:“For the first time in the history of this war, an enemy position was taken exclusively by unmanned platforms – ground systems and drones. The occupiers surrendered, and the operation was carried out without infantry and without losses on our side.”
