Ukraine launched a large-scale drone offensive overnight, targeting multiple regions in western Russia. One since-deleted clip from Oryol shared by a Kremlin-aligned Telegram channel appeared to show a flaming object falling from the sky, which some claimed was a helicopter. Russia’s Ministry of Defence said 127 drones were intercepted, including 41 over Bryansk, 37 over Oryol and 31 over Kursk. Others were downed over Moscow, Vladimir and Ryazan.

In response, Russia launched its own mass drone assault on Ukraine, firing 108 drones across four regions. Ukrainian air defences said 93 were shot down or disabled by electronic warfare. The UK and EU on Tuesday announced fresh sanctions targeting Russian arms suppliers, energy exporters and groups accused of spreading disinformation.

Putin visits Kursk region

Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited Russia’s western Kursk region for the first time since Ukrainian forces were pushed out last month.

The Kremlin said Mr Putin met local volunteer organisations and toured the Kursk-II nuclear power plant during Tuesday’s trip.

State TV showed him speaking with volunteers and officials, including acting governor Alexander Khinshtein.

He was accompanied by Sergei Kiriyenko, the Kremlin’s first deputy chief of staff.

Zelensky thanks UK after fresh sanctions on Russia

President Volodymyr Zelensky has thanked UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for fresh sanctions against Russia, saying “only coercion will work” to end the war.

He said new British and EU measures were a vital part of the “canvas of pressure” on Moscow — and urged the United States to follow suit.

The two leaders also discussed diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and plans for potential high-level meetings.

Mr Zelensky said they had spoken about his recent conversation with President Donald Trump and coordination within the Coalition of the Willing.

He added: “We agreed to stay in close contact, nearly on a daily basis. Thank you, Britain!”

I spoke with UK Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer. I thanked him for the new British sanctions, which help pressure Russia toward peace. Only coercion will work. Today we have a sanctions decision from the UK, as well as from the EU, and it would be good if the United States also\u2026 pic.twitter.com/eFVQnIQ3pd

Trump will 'do a runner' from Ukraine peace talks, warns Wallace

Donald Trump will “do a runner” from brokering peace in Ukraine soon, a former British defence secretary has said.

Former Tory MP Ben Wallace told Times Radio: “I’m not very hopeful, I’m afraid. Throughout this Donald Trump has consistently let Putin off the hook”, despite repeatedly threatening tougher sanctions.

“The reality is Donald Trump has no interest. It’s one of the deals that he will move on from – most of his career in business has been about ‘make a deal and do a runner before it actually unravels’. I think that’s what we’re going to see.”

Laying the blame for the millions of people killed, injured and displaced in the war solely at Mr Putin’s feet, he said: “Donald Trump seems to think spending a lots of time on the telephone to him and being constantly humiliated by him – when he just refuses to do anything that Trump requests – is somehow the way to proceed and let’s move on to a trade deal.”

Mr Wallace, who was defence secretary for the first 18 months of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, added: “No doubt there’ll be a golf resort somewhere near St Petersburg, I suspect, soon.”
