A close ally of Vladimir Putin has reacted to the minerals deal signed between the US and Ukraine, claiming it "breaks" Kyiv.

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said: "Trump has finally broken the Kiev regime into paying for American aid with minerals.

"Now military supplies will have to be paid for with the national wealth of a disappearing country.

"And the US Senate, led by Republicans, is preparing to impose another round of 'crushing sanctions' against us. Let's see how the new administration responds.

"Trump's ratings have gone down, and the 'deep state' is putting up fierce resistance."

Ukrainians welcome the mineral deal

Ukrainians believe that the mineral deal represents a win for the county and brings them closer to ending the war.

Speaking to Express journalist Zak Garner-Purkis in Kyiv, Oleksandr Makarov, 60 said: " “I think Ukraine has won a little bit.

"It shows Russia that Ukraine is getting closer to America for the first time since Trump came to power.”

Theatre stenographer Anna Duhovychna, 47 agreed: “I’m not an economist, but in terms of the relationship between the two countries, I think these things are acceptable.

“I think Ukraine should keep friendly ties with the United States because it's the largest economy in the world. Without their help, it’s going to be catastrophically hard.”

War not ending 'any time soon' - JD Vance

US vice president JD Vance has warned that the conflict will not end "any time soon" despite the mineral deal signed between the two countries.

Speaking on Fox News’s “Special Report with Bret Baier” show, Vance put the emphasis on Russia dn Ukraine to bring the "brutal" conflict to an end.

The deal provides no direct secuity guarentees for Ukraine, with Kyiv instead reliant on implied US support as a result of their financial interests in the country.

Former Russian president and prime minister Dmitry Medvedev has blasted the deal, claiming that the deal will "break Kyiv" financially.

Lashing out at Donald Trump , he said: "Trump has finally broken the Kiev regime into paying for American aid with minerals," as he deliberatley used the Russian spelling of the Ukrainian capital.

"Now military supplies will have to be paid for with the national wealth of a disappearing country.

"And the US Senate, led by Republicans, is preparing to impose another round of 'crushing sanctions' against us. Let's see how the new administration responds.
