The UK has named several countries, including some European neighbours, that Brits should avoid travelling to after geopolitical tensions across the region presented sudden security breakdowns.

Britons are preparing to jet off on their summer vacations in the coming weeks, but should bear in mind the government's advise when travelling outside of the country.

Along with Australia, the US, South Korea and host of other nations, the UK has advised its citizens not to travel to certain high-risk zones, Travel and Tour World reported.

The alerts specifically impacted riskier areas such as Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.

Other countries were placed under higher caution.

The coordinated move by allied governments affected air travel and caused flight disruptions from major European hubs.

The knock-on effect of a single delayed or cancelled flight can ripple across multiple routes, given how interconnected the aviation network is.

The "do not travel" warnings were framed as preventative actions rather than punitive sanctions.

The regions affected by UK travel warnings:

  • Belarus: the foreign office advised against all travel to Belarus
  • Ukraine: the foreign office has advised against all travel to Crimea, within 50km of the border with Belarus in the Volyn, Rivne and Zhytomyr regions. Brits have been advised to avoid all by necessary travel regions in western Ukraine (Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernivtsi and Lviv) and parts further than 50km from the border with Belarus (Volyn, Rivne and Zhytomyr)
  • Russia: the foreign office advised against all travel to Russia
  • Armenia: travellers were advised against all travel to parts of Armenia, particularly near the border with Azerbaijan
  • Azerbaijan: all travel is advised against near the border with Armenia, while all but essential travel is advised against in South-western Azerbaijan
  • Georgia: the foreign office advised against all travel to South Ossetia and Abkhazia
  • Turkey: the foreign office advises against all travel near the Turkey-Syria border
  • Syria: all travel to Syria was advised against
