At least three people were buried under the snow after an avalanche struck in a popular holiday hotspot. The emergency services are now racing to rescue those buried after an avalanche occurred around 9.30 am in the area of the “Rote Piste 9”, near the Daunscharte section of the ski resort above Neustift im Stubaital.
Two people who were buried have been rescued, they have suffered minor injuries. A major search and rescue operation is underway on the Stubai Glacier in Tyrol to rescue those still trapped, involving multiple mountain rescue teams, several helicopters and search dogs. The area is now being searched intensively to locate any further victims.
The number of people affected and the exact circumstances remain unclear. According to Reinhard Klier, head of the Stubai Glacier lifts, the slide is believed to have been triggered by skiers traveling outside the marked slopes.
“Based on current information, the avalanche was triggered by off-piste skiers. The snow masses also partially reached the lower section of piste 9, which was subsequently closed,” Klier said.
Several winter sports enthusiasts were on piste 9 at the time the avalanche debris reached its lower section, local media Meinbezirk.at reported.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and ski area operators have urged visitors to remain within designated slopes due to unstable snow conditions in off- piste terrain.
