Donald Trump reportedly made a promise to Vladimir Putin during their recent phone call, during which they discussed prospects of peace talks to end the war, started by Russia, in Ukraine. The US president vowed to answer his Russian counterpart's calls "anytime", according to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov. Ushakov shared recorded comments with journalists, which revealed the two leaders spoke about the war in Ukraine and the two countries' relationship, but did not set out a timeline for a ceasefire.
They also included a pledge made by Mr Trump to Putin as Washington ramps up its efforts to bring the Russian president to the negotiating table. He reportedly said: "Vladimir, you can pick up the phone anytime, and I’ll be happy to answer and happy to talk to you."

The Republican also said Russia would become one of the US's most important partners once the war in Ukraine is "resolved to some degree", according to Ushakov.
The presidential aide added that neither president "wanted to end" the "rare" phone call - the third one the pair have had.
He said: "I’ll tell you, it’s rare to have conversations of such length, where both presidents - neither of them - wanted to end it, didn’t want, if I can put it this way, to hang up."
Moving forward, Ushakov said that Mr Trump and Putin will organise a "well and thoroughly prepared" in-person meeting, though no date or location have been agreed upon as yet.
The pair previously spoke over the phone on February 12 and March 18. Following their latest conversation, the US president said Russia and Ukraine will "immediately start negotiations toward a ceasefire and, more importantly, an end to the war".
He added that direct talks between Russia and Ukraine are necessary "because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of".
The US President didn't seem to have pressured Putin into making any compromise, as the Kremlin leader said after the phone call that resolving the "root causes" of the war in Ukraine is essential for creating peace - assumed to be a reference to NATO's expansion and Ukraine's desire to join.
The Russian president pinpointed the annexed territory of Crimea and separatist regions in Donbas as key matters that need to be resolved.
He said: "Eliminating the root causes of this crisis is what matters most to us."
