Russian propagandists have taken aim at US President Donald Trump in the wake of his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last Friday (August 14) over the war in Ukraine. Billed as a vital step towards peace, no ceasefire was made.

Shortly after, Russian propagandists took to the country's state media to mock the US leader on the radio show “In Detail,” featuring host Ivan Kamenev. His guest, Alexander Gurnov, a TV persona, quickly began listing Mr Putin's victories at the summit while also ridiculing his US counterpart. "Have you noticed that Trump, unexpectedly for others, during a handshake, is pulling their hand towards himself, forcing a person to bend down? Mr Gurnov asked. "Putin was ready for this." "Tough as firestone, host Mr Kamenev replied.

"First of all, he is a physically stout man. Secondly [...] you can see Trump pulled, but Putin held on. He did not bend, his back is straight, This is important. These small things are very important."

Mr Gurnov then moved on to discuss what he deemed President Putin's next victory.

"Trump got scared," the propagandist said. "Look, at first they wanted it to be one-on-one followed by lunch, and then five-on-five, but all American and European newspapers were writing that Putin will do him in, so to speak.

"With his [Putin's] level of preparation, with his level of intellect, with his level of political intuition, political bravery and ability to be diplomatic, there is hardly a match for Putin," he continued. "Well, maybe [China's] Xi Jinping," referring to one of Mr Putin's closest allies.

"That's why Trump got scared that he will be bent over and decided on a three-on-three."

In the lead-up to the summit, Donald Trump expressed confidence in his ability to make concrete progress towards securing a ceasefire in Ukraine at the meeting. Mr Putin was welcomed with a red carpet and a lengthy handshake by Mr Trump as he deplaned at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson military facility in the Alaskan city of Anchorage.

However, a few hours later, Alaska's tone was much more subdued. Anticipated to take seven hours, the meeting wrapped up in less than three. Both presidents departed on their respective planes, with no clear breakthrough on the war. They addressed journalists after the talks with brief, pre-prepared statements. Neither leader took any questions.

A subdued Mr Trump praised the “extremely productive meeting”, in which he said “many points were agreed to”. He said there is a “very good chance of getting there” – referring to a ceasefire – but conceded that there remain sticking points with Moscow, including at least one “significant” one.

Mr Putin said his country is committed to ending the war, but the conflict’s “primary causes” must be eliminated for an agreement to be long-lasting. He also warned Ukraine and the European Union against throwing a “wrench in the works” and cautioned against attempts to use “backroom dealings to conduct provocations to torpedo the nascent progress”.
