Donald Trump's administration has issued a bold statement on abortion in the UK in its annual report on human rights practices in foreign countries. The US has officially designated abortions on the NHS as a human rights violation, alongside other practices such as arrests for hate speech, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) hiring policies and the facilitation of mass migration.

This comes as part of what the Trump administration claimed were “destructive ideologies” promoted by the Biden administration and had “been used to propagate human rights violations”. “President Trump will not allow the mutilation of children, attacks on free speech, and racially discriminatory practices, to go unchecked,” the US state department wrote on X. The Country Reports on Human Rights Practices is mandated by law and covers all countries receiving US assistance and all United Nations member states.

According to the latest data published by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHS) in 2022, 252,000 abortions were performed in England and Wales - a record high - with 99% of them funded by the NHS. While 19% of abortions occurred in NHS hospitals, 80% were performed in independent sector clinics under NHS contracts.

The UK and other member states will now be asked to count the number of abortions taking place in their countries, with the risk of being denounced in the official report for funding abortions or distributing drugs that end a pregnancy. While not obligated to provide information, those countries that refuse will be explicitly stated in the report.

“In recent years, new destructive ideologies have given safe harbour to human rights violations,” Tommy Pigott, a state department spokesman, told The Daily Signal.

“The Trump administration will not allow these human rights violations, such as the mutilation of children, laws that infringe on free speech, and racially discriminatory employment practices, to go unchecked. We are saying enough is enough.”

US officials will also track coercive euthanasia, violations of religious freedom such as antisemitism and medical abuses, including forced organ harvesting, forced testing and eugenic gene editing of human embryos.

The directives demonstrate the Trump administration’s "America First" approach and come as Washington seeks to align foreign policy more closely with its own political agenda.
