Donald Trump has accused Jeffrey Epstein of trying to thwart his election victory last year during a furious press conference on Tuesday. Speaking from the White House, the US President said he "didn't know too much about" the files but did know "who he is". "It's too bad," Mr Trump added.

The US leader then went on to discuss American journalist Michael Wolff, who, Mr Trump claimed, "conspired" with Epstein "against me in order to fight like hell to make sure I lose the election".

"That was he only thing mentioned about me", he claimed, in the millions of files released last Friday (January 30). Continuing his bizarre rant, Mr Trump went on to say that there was some "really bad stuff" about Democrats in the files, "but about me, that Wolff, whoever Wolff is [...] and Epstein conspired against me [...] so I lose the election, or worse. So that takes care of Epstein as far as Trump is concerned."

"When Epstein was alive, nobody cared about him," Mr Trump continued. "When he's dead, they care about him. But it's really a Democrat problem, it's not a Republican problem."

This comes after Mr Wolff on Sunday (February 1) hit back at President Trump’s threat of filing a lawsuit claiming Wolff and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein conspired to hurt him politically, with the writer telling the president to "bring it on".

Mr Wolff, in a video posted on Instagram, referred to when first lady Melania Trump threatened to sue him after he reported she was part of Epstein’s social circle, "which we can see [is true] in these latest emails that have been released". Mr Wolff then threatened to sue her back, accusing her of intimidation.

“This lawsuit gives me the power to subpoena Mrs. Trump, Mr. Trump and all their friends to talk about the Trumps’ relationship with Jeffrey Epstein,” the author said. “And by the by, I raised $800,000 in a GoFundMe campaign to fund this lawsuit. So, bring it on. I believe that if the American public knew the real nature of Donald Trump’s long relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, they would turn away in horror and revulsion,” he added. “So, sue me. Let’s sue each other. I have nothing to hide, but Mr. President, you surely do.”

Mr Wolff said he woke up to find that the president “had threatened to sue me. Again.”

“I think this is the third or possibly fourth time that the president of the United States has threatened to sue me. Apparently, he was asked about his reaction to the 3 million pages of Epstein files that had been released and his response was that - well, he was going to sue ‘Wolff, a writer,’ because I had ‘conspired with Epstein to frame him,’ I think was his point.”

Mr Wolff referred to a point in his 2019 book about the president, “Siege: Trump Under Fire”, in which Epstein told him about his “breakup” with Mr Trump over real estate in Palm Beach. The Department of Justice (DOJ) under Mr Trump then arrested Epstein shortly after the book was published, the author said.
