A massive fire has engulfed and seemingly destroyed the main stage of a popular music festival set to begin in just hours. The main stage of Tomorrowland, to be launched on Friday in Belgium, was burned down on Wednesday, chilling clips show. The inferno ripped through the venue's main stage in Boom. There are no festivalgoers at the site, but it has been reported that around 1,000 employees are there.

At present, it is not clear as to whether anyone has been injured in the fire. Locals have been urged to shut their windows and doors. Due to get going on Friday, the European festival sees many thousands of fans attending every year over one weekend to listen to electronic sets. Last year, organisers welcomed about 400,000 people from more than 200 countries. Videos shared online show flames and thick plumes of smoke being sent up into the air.

Fireworks can also be heard, but it is not known whether these are linked to the incident.

Footage also seems to suggest that the fire started on the right side of the stage, as festival employees kept their distance away from the blaze, making their way towards a grassy hill.

More videos showed that the flames had evicerated the structure, leaving only its frame behind.

Photos also include emergency services at the site, icluding firefighters attempting to bring the fire under control.

This year, Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, Charlotte de Witte, Amelie Lens, Alok and FISHER were due to perform on the main stage.
