Only small crowds exploring Times Square

An ice cream truck owner, Ahmed Talal, told the New York Times that he heard the gunshots when they rang out across Times Square early on Saturday morning.

He said he saw people running in his direction "followed by about 10 cops", and added that, while people have continued to walk around Times Square, crowds are reduced.

He said the crowds were around half as large as they would typically be, around 90 minutes after the incident.

Times Square a 'gun-free zone'

Times Square is designated as a gun-free zone.

Following a Supreme Court decision that expanded gun rights, New York State enacted a law that prohibits firearms in "sensitive locations," including Times Square, schools, government buildings and places of worship. The law aims to balance gun rights with public safety concerns.

This means it is illegal for most people to carry a gun there, even if they have a permit.

The city has installed signs in the area to inform the public of this restriction.

Times Square shooting just days after deadly shooting rocked Midtown Manhattan

Just before 6pm on July 28, Shane Devon Tamura pulled up to a busy office skyscraper, 345 Park Avenue, after driving from his home in Las Vegas.

Armed with an M4 rifle, the 27-year-old opened fire at the building's entrance, killing a New York City police officer, Didarul Islam, who was expecting his third child.

Tamura then shot and killed an investment company executive - a mother of two - before gunning down a security guard.

Taking the lift to the 33rd floor, he entered the HQ of the property management firm Rudin, where he fatally shot a 27-year-old associate. An NFL employee was also critically injured during the rampage but is expected to survive.

The attack ended when Tamura turned the gun on himself.

Times Square shooting comes as NYPD announces record-low shooting incidents

The horror shooting in Times Square on Saturday comes just days after Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch announced that in the first seven months of 2025, New York City saw the fewest shooting incidents and shooting victims in recorded history.

During the seven-month stretch, the city recorded 412 shooting incidents and 489 shooting victims, compared to the previous all-time lows of 426 in 2017 and 522 in 2018.

July 2025 also set new record lows for the month, with just 75 shooting incidents and 92 shooting victims - breaking the previous July record of 79 shooting incidents and 102 shooting victims, set in 2017.

“New York City just recorded the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims ever for the first seven months of any year, while major crime continued to decline citywide. Excluding the two pandemic years, it was also the safest July in our subway system in recorded history,” said NYPD Commissioner Tisch.

“These achievements are to the direct credit of the women and men of the NYPD, who now carry forward the legacy of Detective First Grade Didarul Islam.”

Didarul Islam was killed along with three others in the mass shooting at Park Avenue Tower in Midtown Manhattan on July 28.
