Times Square in central Manhattan, New York City, was evacuated on Monday afternoon following a bomb threat. Officers, including bomb squad technicians, rushed to the famous area, crossed by millions of tourists and locals every day, on August 18, following reports of a suspicious package.
Chilling footage shared on social media shows a large police presence in the area, with a cordon in place. Several police vehicles, including a van, blocked off the area to the public.

NYPD has urged people to avoid the area near Times Square. While it is not clear whether this is related to the suspicious package, the area mentioned is near the famous spot.
The message shared on X read: "ADVISORY: Due to an active police investigation, avoid the area of West 43rd Street and 7th Avenue in Manhattan within the confines of @NYPDMTS. Expect emergency vehicles and delays in the surrounding area."
Times Square is located between Broadway and the 42nd Street.

The large presence of officers in Times Square and the cordon prompted a large crowd to gather outside of the area currently off-limits to the public.
Speaking about the incident, one social media user suggested the bomb threat had been sparked by a "suspicious package", although no official confirmation has yet emerged.
