Times Square in central Manhattan, New York City, was evacuated on Monday afternoon following a bomb threat. Officers, including bomb squad technicians, rushed to the famous area, crossed by millions of tourists and locals every day, on August 18, following reports of a suspicious package. 

Chilling footage shared on social media shows a large police presence in the area, with a cordon in place. Several police vehicles, including a van, blocked off the area to the public.

Subway lines temporarily suspended over bomb threat

The 42nd Street–Times Square subway station was evacuated and temporarily closed after the suspicious package was found outside. 

The NYPD substation serves the N, Q, R, W, 1, 2, 3, A, C, and E lines.

The package was found at the front door of the NYPD facility in Times Square, police confirmed. 

It has now been deemed non-hazardous and roads have reopened.

The suspicious package outside the NYPD’s Times Square facility has been deemed non-hazardous, officials said. 

As of 11.53am local time, they confirmed the item was not dangerous, Fox5 New York reports.

Roads begin to reopen

Roads have reopened at Times Square after a suspicious package was left at the NYPD substation.

The bomb squad investigated the package and deemed it not dangerous, Fox5 New York reports.

Additional officers were requested for crowd control. Police deployed drones and K-9 units in response to the incident.

Police urges 'avoid the area'

NYPD has urged people to avoid the area near Times Square. While it is not clear whether this is related to the suspicious package, the area mentioned is near the famous spot. 

The message shared on X read: "ADVISORY: Due to an active police investigation, avoid the area of West 43rd Street and 7th Avenue in Manhattan within the confines of @NYPDMTS. Expect emergency vehicles and delays in the surrounding area." 

Times Square is located between Broadway and the 42nd Street.

Large crowd gathers near the cordon

The large presence of officers in Times Square and the cordon prompted a large crowd to gather outside of the area currently off-limits to the public. 

Speaking about the incident, one social media user suggested the bomb threat had been sparked by a "suspicious package", although no official confirmation has yet emerged.
