Global air travel is continuing to surge, rebounding from a major dip during the Covid pandemic. In the first quarter of 2025, a whopping 60 million passengers travelled through UK airports, according to UK Civil Aviation Authority data, a 2% uptick on the same period in 2024.
Meanwhile, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a trade association for the industry, international full-year traffic increased 13.6% last year compared to 2023, while capacity leapt by 12.8%. The rise in demand, as well as rapid population growth in emerging economies, has seen many countries race to expand existing airports with greater capacity, or even build new ones.
Last year, Construction Briefing, an industry news outlet, gathered together 15 of the biggest mega-airports being constructed or developed, including one that is expected to be the biggest flight hub ever.
King Salman International Airport is set to open in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, by the year 2030, with a staggering £23 billion price tag.
Five huge projects are also underway in the US, including major expansions of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in Texas, and JFK Airport, in New York.
Additionally three major airport in California are also undergoing works, with Los Angeles International Airport, San Diego International Airport, San Francisco International Airport increasing their capacity.
Work is also being undertaken in Australia on Perth Airport which is will see new terminals, a brand new parallel runway, as well as a hotel, and improved facilities, as per Civil Engineer.
Projects are also taking place across the globe in Ethiopa, India, Philippines and elsewhere amid a push to accomodate more passengers and improve transport links.
A brand new aiport in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City, the Long Thanh International Airport, is also under construction.
