The startling discovery that gives Trump's bid to take over Greenland a huge boost

Donald Trump’s repeated calls to take over Greenland could be down to a nuclear base lying deep in the world’s largest island’s frozen wilderness. The Trump administration says they want to take over the world’s biggest island for national security purposes and it's not the first time the country’s strategic importance has been the focus of the U.S. military.

Built in 1959 Camp Century had been built with the original purpose of storing nuclear missiles that could be fired should the US be wiped out by the Soviet Union. Dubbed the 'city under the ice', Chad Greene from NASA's jet propulsion laboratory, unexpectedly spotted something unexpected under the miles of ice in April 2024.

Using the plane's radar and 3D modelling, he was able to reconstruct the strange structure that loomed under a huge glacier. Spanning 9800 feet over 21 tunnels, the vast underground megastructure was itself powered by a nuclear reactor throughout its occupation by the US military, from 1959 to 1967.

The project was deemed unfeasible due to the constantly shifting ice and abandoned in 1967. By 1969, the camp was in ruins, National Geographic reports, with snow spilling into hallways and splintered wood beams.

For years the infrastructure of Camp Century was little more than a blip on the radar, but NASA was able to capture a glimpse of it using their 'Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar', which was able to map the ice's surface and internal layers to create a 3D structure.

And it appears this startling discovery may have pressed the president in reigniting calls to take over Greenland and Camp Century from NATO-ally Denmark, warning he won’t rule out military action despite officials declaring it isn’t for sale.

"I don't rule it out," Trump said in an interview that aired during the May 4 episode of Meet the Press. "I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything."

"We need Greenland very badly,' the president added. "Greenland is a very small amount of people, which we'll take care of, and we'll cherish them, and all of that. But we need that for international security."

Greenland is rich in natural resources and offers a number of strategic advantages, especially as shipping through the Arctic region becomes easier due to warming temperatures.

Greenland is a semiautonomous territory of Denmark and has been part of the NATO nation for 600 years.
