A picturesque seaside town with a rich maritime history has been named as the most beautiful in northern Spain.
Mundaka, a charming coastal town located in the Basque Country is particularly famous for its natural beauty, rich culture and a world-renowned surfing scene.
The coastal town has been crowned with the coveted title by National Geographic as they call it a “must-visit” for 2025, reports The Olive Press.
The beautiful location is home to one of the best left-hand waves in the world, making it a mecca for surfers. The wave is located at the mouth of the Oka River and is celebrated for its long, barreling quality, which attracts professional surfers from around the globe.
It is nestled within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-designated area known for its stunning landscapes, estuaries, wetlands and diverse wildlife.
The town itself offers breathtaking views of the Bay of Biscay and lush green hills.

Its narrow streets, picturesque harbour and traditional Basque houses add to its charm.
Visitors can enjoy local Basque cuisine, particularly fresh seafood and pintxos (small snacks similar to tapas).
Travellers can visit Santa Catalina Church which is one of the famous tourist attractions in the town.
The small, beautiful church near the coast has a history dating back to the 12th century.
Aside from surfing, the beaches in Mundaka are perfect for relaxation and scenic walks.
People can also enjoy numerous trails in and around the Urdaibai Reserve that provide opportunities to explore the area's natural beauty.

Tourists who have been to the charming town have shared their experiences on TripAdvisor forum and most of them have the same opinion.
One person wrote on TripAdvisor travel forum: “If you are traveling in the Basque Country (and you should), you should make a few stops in between the big cities and Mundaka is one of them, even if you don't surf.
"The views are so nice and the people are extremely friendly, the beach is gorgeous and it is definitely worth spending a day there. If you do surf, maybe even a few.”
A second person shared: "The photo ops were excellent, but the weather sucked!
"Despite the rain, we enjoyed this little fishing town and had lunch at a delightful cafe right by Mundaka's picture-perfect little harbor."
They added: "The food was tasty, the views nice, and the photo ops plentiful. Scenic town with cobblestones, cute apartments, etc. Nice place to visit.”
