A train journey through Sri Lanka between Kandy and Ella is often described as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world.
The whole route stretches 85-miles and is popular with tourists and locals. It’s known for stunning views of tea plantations, mountains and local villages among many other things.
Speaking exclusively to the Express about the journey, travel expert and the founder of Journey Compass, Paul Fournier said: “Not long ago, I found myself on the train from Kandy to Ella, a journey people say is one of the most beautiful in the world.
“They’re not wrong. It’s slow and rattles along through mist-covered tea plantations and mountain valleys, giving you a front-row seat to rural life.
“Local vendors hop on at random stops, selling chai and samosas out of plastic baskets, adding a bit of flavour to the experience.

Travellers can book tickets up to 37 days in advance through online agencies, as the Sri Lanka Railway doesn’t yet have an official online booking option.
Tickets are also available at local train stations within 10 to 30 days before the journey. Prices range between £1 and £3, depending on the class of travel.
Fournier suggested that those travelling with unreserved second- or third-class tickets may have to stand if they can’t find a seat.
Once the journey reaches Ella, many travellers head to Little Adam’s Peak. It’s a popular hiking spot with gorgeous views.
