The house engineers have built a motorway around - and it's not the M62

Engineers have built a motorway around a man's home in China. The owner of the two-storey home, Huang Ping, refused a relocation package worth nearly £200,000 from the local authorities who decided to go ahead with constructing the road.

Huang has since spent his days avoiding the construction site and said it feels as if he has "lost a big bet". His home is now level with the motorway and sometimes shakes. He said: "If I could turn back time, I would agree to the demolition conditions they offered...Now it feels like I lost a big bet. I regret it a bit."

He was reportedly offered £178,245 and two other properties by the local authorities. However, he decided to stay put in the home alongside his 11-year-old grandson.

The situation in China may remind some readers of the farmhouse which lies in the middle of the M62 motorway near Huddersfield. Scott Hall Farm is home to Paul Thorp, his wife Jill Falkingham-Thorp, and their son John-Will.

The sheep farmers care for over 900 ewes and 20 Angus cattle that graze on the hills surrounding the motorway between junctions 22 and 23. While it is rumoured that the farmer refused to move when the road was built, the real story is a bit less exciting.

The farm was actually owned by Yorkshire Water when the M62 was built. As previously reported by the Liverpool Echo, Scott Hall Farm could not be asphalted over due to a geological fault along the M62 route where it is located.

While appearing on the Channel 4 show 'The Pennines: Backbone of Britain', Paul said: "I came here as a 22-year-old lad who was mad about farming. To get an opportunity to take on a farm this size were once in a lifetime, so it's my home now. It's just everything.

"It's just like any other farm really. You've got to know your land, know your job and plan around it. The only thing is we've got six lanes of traffic through ours. It throws up its challenges - it's very unique."

On the M62 traffic, he continued: "The mind boggles as to where everybody is going. I just cannot get me head around where everybody's going every day."

A major problem for a sheep farmer on the M62 is when sheep escape. Paul said he needs help from the dry stone wallers to solve the issue.

He explained: "As my grandad said, the stone in Yorkshire were put underneath Yorkshire so it could be used on top of Yorkshire. There's nowt else that would last, if you put a concrete wall up here, it would just erode in no time."
