Down to Earth

Beer is Europe’s most consumed alcoholic beverage – but what happens to the waste it creates? In France alone, breweries generate over 600,000 tons of spent grain every year.

Until recently, most of this organic waste was fed to livestock or simply discarded. But a new wave of French entrepreneurs is giving it a second – and even a third – life.

Beer sludge is now turned into flour for healthy treats, eco-friendly furniture, leather and even reusable cutlery. Once seen as a useless leftover, brewers’ spent grain is becoming a surprising ally in the fight against food waste and resource scarcity.
