Summer is in full swing, and as prices for getaways are rising, it's becoming even harder to find an inexpensive city break for the family to soak up some fun – until now. But there's a new destination on the scene in Europe where you can enjoy a short escape without the grand old price tag.

It might just be time to try something new and travel to Bitola in North Macedonia, a lesser-known city full of culture and charm, just waiting for you to explore it.  What makes Bitola such a knockout destination? Well, for starters, the average hotel price costs less than £30 for one night, with the average attraction costing under £1.

Pair this with summer temperatures that stay in the highs of the 20 degrees region, and you've got yourself a nice-looking trip away, according to Condé Nast Traveller.

The city is in the heart of the southwestern part of North Macedonia and is set against the beautiful backdrop of a number of stunning mountain ranges. Sandwiched between Albania and Bulgaria, the country itself is a key junction for commercial, industrial and cultural purposes, and the city has long been referred to as the city of consuls, acting as a place where many European countries have consulates.

Walking tours are available to explore the city's history from the Skopje Stone Bridge, standing tall for decades, the Old Bazaar and the rich history of Mother Teresa, who was born in Macedonia.

Most visitors choose to include their sightseeing tour by visiting the Skopje Fortress Kale in the old town.

The classical city is home to monuments steeped in history, such as the Bitola Clock Tower and Mémorial d'Orient. Although the one place bringing in the tourists as a must-see is the "best street" in Bitola for shopping and tucking into local treats.

It acts as a long street in the centre of the city, beginning at Magnolia Square and ending right down in the City Park. The entire pedestrianised street is graced with a range of neoclassical buildings lined with stores, cafes and restaurants offering localised goods.
