An angry rhino attacked a jeep during a tourist safari in India. A video shared on X captured the moment the wild animal approached the vehicle and nearly overturned it.

The incident took place at the Salbari Range at Manas National Park in Assam, northeastern India, last Thursday, May 29. The footage shows two jeeps parked on a forest path before the rhino repeatedly tries to flip one of the vehicles. According to the Times of India, two men then chased the rhino away and no one was injured.

Rhino sightings are more common during the monsoon season as they are forced to leave their habitats due to flooding. As they try and find better grazing spots, the likelihood of contact with humans increases.

However, it's unknown why the rhino reacted like it did towards the safari jeep. According to Nandan Pratim Sharma Bordoloi, Editor of News Live in India, the incident "remains a mystery".

He shared the footage on X and wrote: "In Manas National Park in Assam, this furious rhino has attacked a tourist vehicle no less than five times. Each day, rhino charges at the mere sight of humans. The reason behind its anger toward people remains a mystery."

While rhino attacks are not common in India, they have been known to happen when the animal feels threatened. Equally, rhinos might carry out an attack in order to protect their calves.

In March, a furious rhino chased after two safari trucks full of tourists at the Manas National Park. The drivers managed to accelerate away down a muddy track away from the animal.

However, the rhino did cause damage to one of the vehicles as it launched its head to the side of the jeep. Fortunately, no one was  injured but the tourists were shaken up.

Tourists were less lucky in 2023 when a rhino charged at a jeep and caused it to flip. The incident, which took place at the Jaldapar National Park in West Bengal, left six people injured.

Deepak M, the national park's divisional forest officer, told the Indpendent: "One of the tourists who saw the rhino panicked and made a sound because of which the animal also got scared. The vehicle was reversing as it tried to back off but the driver lost control of the jeep slightly, which led the vehicle to slide off the jungle tracks."
