PRESS REVIEW – Wednesday, August 27: The news of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's engagement breaks the internet. But first: Australian papers discuss alleged Iranian involvement in terrorist attacks last year. Next, Nigel Farage's migration plan makes headlines in the British press. Also, Danny Boon's scammer is set to go on trial for fraud. Finally, a couple finds their wedding ring in the local landfill.
Australia's front pages are almost all carrying the same story. The Australian's headline reads "Iran attacks us". This comes after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese accused Iran of coordinating two anti-Semitic terror attacks in Australia in 2024. The West Australian calls it an "act of war", and the most dangerous example of foreign interference in Australian history. The Canberra Times focuses on the expulsion of the Iranian ambassador, reporting that Australia has also suspended operations at its embassy in Tehran.
In the UK, meanwhile, the papers are discussing far-right Reform party leader Nigel Farage's migration plan. The Daily Express says that Farage plans to copy US President Donald's Trump mass deportation programme by ordering immigration enforcement teams to carry out raids across the country. The Daily Mirror's political editor traces back the "history of right-wing politicians playing the migrant card". The Telegraph reports that the Taliban have declared themselves ready and willing to work with Farage.
Here in France, actor Danny Boon is expected to take part in a unusual trial, after being scammed by a con artist. The Guardian describes the case in detail. Boon was convinced to enter deals to worth millions to renovate his yachts, as well invest in bogus schemes with the Irish Central Bank. The trial is set to start in September.
Stateside, US pop phenomenon Taylor Swift has announced her engagement to her partner Travis Kelce, and the announcement is getting a lot of coverage. The Sun and The Independent look at public reactions to the Instagram post announcing the news. The Guardian has a look through the online frenzy. The Washington Post openly flaunts its obsession with the engagement, while People Magazine has a deeper look into Swift's engagement ring.
Finally, CBC reports that a man in Canada has been able to find his wife's wedding ring after losing it in the local landfill.
