Spain has been hit by a communication outage, leaving many internet and landline users unable to use their services. The incident also had an impact on emergency services, prompting blue light organisations in several communities around Spain to issue an alternative number to '112', the local equivalent of Britain's 999.

The issue, which began early on Tuesday, May 20, appears to be linked in network upgrade being carried out by Telefonica, local news outlet El Diario reports. Many internet users appear to have also been impacted by issues, however it is unclear whether they are linked to Telefonica's works. Clients of Movistar and O2, two Telefonica companies, reported fibre optics being down.

Situation in Valencia

The Emergències 112CV X account, the GVA Emergency Coordination Center, posted at 7.18am on Tuesday about the incident.

"Incidents in the national communications network outside of 112 Comunitat Valenciana are affecting the 112 service," it said.

"Alternative telephone number 963428000 is enabled."

Like in Aragon, the account posted about 10 minutes ago saying the 112 phone is back in service, but the alternative number will remain active until further notice.

Specific cause of the outage unknown

So far, the specific causes of the outage are unknown.

Telefonica claims it was caused by a "network upgrade" which has affected landline and data services for some companies.

The company has said it is gathering information on the incidents detected so far and will provide more details as soon as possible.

The situation in Aragon

Sources from the Aragon government said "it is very difficult to contact emergency centers".

As a result, the regional government has enabled three alternative mobile lines: 683638273, 683134645 and 660705897 to contact the 112 Emergency Service.

Although the 112 number in Aragon was operating normally again after 9am, the government will maintain the three mobile numbers as an alternative until the network is stabilised.

This measure has also been implemented in other regions in Spain, including the Basque Country and the Valencian Community, which have also provided alternative lines.
