Residents sent emergency phone alert

Residents living in the northeastern part of Spain have beent sent an emergency phone alert as locals and tourists - whilst Britain basks in the sun.

Catalonia was under a red weather warning - the most severe.

The message, sent by the Catalan Civil Protection unit at 2:30pm local time yesterday, warns residents to avoid doing an array or normal activities such as travelling or any outdoor activity.

It reads: “CECAT: Risk of flooding due to torrential rain until 9pm.

"Avoid travel and outdoor activity. Do not go near rivers, streams or floodplains, avoid low-lying areas and basements. If water enters you, go up to higher floors. In case of emergency, call 112.”

Dramatic footage from Catalunya shows cars completely submerged in water with some being swept away in the flash floods.
